Build it and they will come

That has become an accepted business philosophy since 1989 when “Build it and he will come” was uttered in the successful movie Field Of Dreams.

Examples are everywhere. Take the Nullarbor Links, an 18-hole golf course stretching 1365 kilometres along Australia’s southern coast. The course was built to get people to stop, take a break and spend time, and money, in remote centres between Ceduna and Kalgoorlie.

Pull into any roadhouse along the way that has a golf hole nearby and owners will tell you that the Nullarbor Links has been a resounding success for their business.

“Build it and they will come” is a philosophy we’re embracing at Perkin Projects. Allow us to explain.

At St Germain Central, the shopping centre in Clyde North, we have built a fast-charging site for electric vehicles.  This site is surrounded by cafes, fast food providers, hairdressing salons, a chemist and other assorted retail outlets.

By building an EV charging site in a shopping centre, we’re providing you with an opportunity to support local business, rather than large highway petrol outlets, many of which have caused commuters to avoid small towns and suburban shopping strips.

Our North Clyde site is ready for use and delivers the fast, reliable charging you, as an EV owner, expects.

We’re proud to be part of this shift, and we are already planning future charging locations aimed at supporting communities where every visit matters. These are sites that are not simply providing another income stream for multinational oil companies.

These localised charging centres are already proving to have social benefits. Research from JOLT Australia, an international EV charge network provider, found that 87 per cent of EV drivers using street-side chargers spend money in local businesses during their charging sessions.

According to JOLT, each charger can generate around $A90,000 in local spending annually. More than half their customers (57 per cent) say they aligned their car’s charging to coincide with their own shopping.

So why are we telling you this and how can you help?

We’re asking you to rethink your charging habits.

Instead of stopping at some multinational highway petrol outlet to charge your EV, consider supporting your local community. It will help others and it may be cheaper for you.

And if you know a business, sporting club, shopping precinct or community area that would be a great fit for an EV charger let us know. We are always looking for potential outlets.
